I have a Public Works problem. Who is in charge? As Director of Public Works & Utilities, all public works activities are under my responsibility. Each area has its own superintendent or manager and our residents and customers may contact each department directly. However, if you have an unresolved problem, please call me, Daniel S. Winkler, P.E., 262-248-2311. Why are the streets so potholed and who do I call with a pothole? Due to the nature of the winter with extreme variability of temperature as well as over 80" of snowfall, streets statewide have experienced extraordinary deterioration. Most potholes are caused by water finding its way into the cracks in a street pavement followed by below freezing temperatures. The water confined in the pavement freezes and expands, breaking out the asphalt around it. You may contact the Street Department at 248-6644 or Public Works Administration at 248-2311 if you see or drive over a bad pothole. We are out almost daily patching as weather permits. When the does the skateboard park open? The Street Department opens the park during the week at 3:00 PM. The Police Department closes it at dark. Rules must be observed including acceptable behavior and the wearing of helmets and protective pads. Violators will be issued municipal citations. Repeat offenders will be banned from the park. The park is closed for the winter months to protect the surface. I had a high water bill caused by a leak. Do I have to pay it? The answer is yes. The Commission does have a policy regarding possible refund of part of the sewer charge if the water leaked did not enter the sanitary sewer system. The process is to pay the current bill, provide evidence of the plumbing repair, request relief in writing and notify our office so we may inspect conditions to verify the situation. My sewer is backed up? Help! Contact the wastewater plant at 248-2394 immediately. If you don't get through contact the Police Department at 248-4455. They will page our on-call representative who should be there within the hour to help. Who do I see for a driveway, water service, new sidewalk, excavation or other permit in City right-of-way? Construction permits in right-of-way are issued out of the Utility Commission office at 361 West Main Street. Building permits are administered by the Building Inspector at City Hall, 626 Geneva Street. When does the City pick up branches and yard waste? The City's collection program frequency is unmatched anywhere else in the state. During the season, we pick up both yard waste and branches on a weekly basis. Refer to the collection schedule elsewhere in this web site for details. My tree needs trimming or my neighbor's private tree is ready to fall on my house. What do I do? The City arranges to trim or remove all parkway trees. This usually occurs during the winter, and the stump is ground out in the spring and filled with dirt/seed. A hazardous private tree is also subject to City regulation. Simply contact the Street Superintendent at 248-6644 for either need. If you cannot reach him contact this office.
